In March of the twentieth, BMW presented the concept of a five-door electric liftback i4, and in early June, the production version of the model premiered and all the details about it were revealed.
In fact, the new BMW i4 2021 is an electric version of the usual “four” of the latest generation. The novelty differs from the latter only in the design of the bumpers and the characteristic blue decor, indicating that we have a full-fledged electric car.
It is interesting that large vertical “nostrils” of the radiator grill are present here, but they are made in the form of plugs. Plus, such a car has original 19-inch wheels, as well as door handles “recessed” into the body. The drag coefficient is stated at 0.24.
The interior of the electric liftback is made in the corporate style for BMW. The shape of the installed front panel and center console is well known from other models of the Bavarian brand, but there are some nuances.
So, in front of the driver there is a panel without a visor, on which two large screens are located under one glass. The left one has a diagonal of 12.3 inches and serves as a dashboard, and the right one is a 14.9-inch touchscreen of the multimedia system.
Interestingly, there is no separate climate control panel on the BMW i4, and the corresponding functionality is controlled directly from the multimedia screen. Plus, the electric car is equipped with a new (eighth) generation iDrive system. It has advanced functionality for working with cloud services and is able to adapt to the driver’s habits and preferences.
The new model BMW i4 2021-2022 is built on an electric platform, in which the traction battery housing is integrated directly into the power structure of the body. The overall length of the five-door is 4,783 mm, the wheelbase is 2,856, the width is 1,852, and the height is 1,448 millimeters.
By default, the volume of the trunk of an electric car is 470 liters, while the rear sofa folds in a ratio of 40:20:40, making it possible to increase the hold capacity up to 1,290 liters. Plus, the car is capable of pulling a trailer weighing up to 1.6 tons.
The suspension structure on the BMW i4 is the same as on a conventional “three-ruble” – MacPherson struts are used on the front axle, and a five-link rear axle. At the same time, the “electric train” in the base has a rear air suspension, and it also has a wider track: at the front by 26 mm, and at the rear by 13 mm. Due to the low position of the electrical components, the center of gravity is 53 mm lower.
The liftback ai 3 has the fifth generation BMW electrical equipment. In other words, the power plant consists of compact modular electric motors and a new traction battery with a capacity of 83.9 kWh (although 80.7 kWh of them are used).
So far, the Bavarians have presented two versions of the electric car. The base i4 eDrive40 is rear-wheel drive and one 340 hp electric motor. (430 Nm). The curb weight of this version is at the level of 2,125 kg, while acceleration from zero to hundreds is possible in 5.7 seconds. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 190 km / h, and the power reserve reaches 590 km (according to the WLTP cycle).
A more advanced modification of the BMW i4 M50 was developed in cooperation with the specialists of the M division. This liftback has four-wheel drive and two electric motors. The performance of the front is 258 hp, and the rear is 313 hp. The total output can reach 544 “horses” and 795 Nm of torque, but only in the short-term “Sport Boost” mode.
The four-wheel drive five-door weighs 2,290 kg, but accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 3.9 seconds. Its maximum speed is also limited, but already at around 225 kilometers per hour. The range is declared at 510 km. In technical terms, such a modification can boast of the presence of an adaptive M-suspension with additional stretch marks.
Interestingly, both presented versions of the 2021 BMW i4 have their own sound, which was created by the famous German composer. Hans Zimmer… Thanks to his efforts, the electric car should become more “visible” for pedestrians.
Plus, the Bavarian liftback has an advanced recuperation system that allows you to drive “with one pedal”. On the single-engine version, the maximum recuperation power is 116 kW, and on the twin-engine version – 105 kW. In this case, the brakes of the “train” are quite effective: ventilated discs “in a circle” with four-piston mechanisms in front.
You can recharge the BMW i4 battery both from a regular outlet and from a fast DC terminal. In the latter case, the charging power is 200 kW, and it takes only half an hour to replenish the battery from 10 to 80%.
The list of equipment of the model also includes a full range of electronic assistants, among which there is also an autopilot of the second level. The latter is an adaptive cruise control with lane keeping and traffic sign recognition functions.
The Germans will start mass production of the BMW i4 at the main plant in Munich. The liftback will go on sale in November 2021, with the car first making its debut in Norway. The prices are already known: the rear-wheel drive version costs from 58,300 euros (5.2 million rubles at the current exchange rate), and the all-wheel drive – from € 69,900 (6.2 million rubles).
Over time, the geography of sales of the model will be expanded, and an electric car will appear in Russia. Acceptance of orders is already open, but prices have not yet been announced.
