Some people want to buy electric cars, not just Tesla. But how do you know which one is the best? There are many kinds of electric cars and some may be better than others.
We cannot tell you what car is right for your life, but we can tell you which cars might be a good fit. Do you want a cheaper car with fewer features? Or do you want a more expensive car that has more features, like the ability to drive without using gas?
A Roadshow is a place where people who make cars come to talk about their new cars. They are talking about electric cars in the US. People who work there have driven many of these electric cars and know which ones are good and which ones are not good.

Mini Cooper SE
Mini is new to the Electric Vehicle world, but their first car is really good. It doesn’t have a lot of range, but it’s fun to drive and it’s great when you’re in it. And the price is surprisingly low! We’re also a total sucker for those electrical outlet-style wheels.
This car does 110 miles to the charge, but it has 181 horsepower and a bunch of torque. That means that even with fewer miles per charge, you’ll have fun. When you have a 50-kilowatt fast charger, it will take about half an hour to get 80% of a charge.
The Chevy Bolt is our runner-up because it does not have very good driving dynamics or an interior that is very nice, but it does have a lot of range. The Bolt gets a refresh for the 2022 model year. This means you can wait a few months if you really want an American EV.
The Bolt is still one of the best deals on the market when it comes to how much you can drive versus how much you will pay for it. The car has a range of 259 miles. It is also good to drive because it has 200 horsepower. If you can afford the extra money and need the range, then this car is a good option.
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford is new to the EV game. But they make a good effort with the Mach-E Mustang. The Mach-E is a great vehicle. It has a good range, an awesome interior and it drives really well. It also has 29 cubic feet of space when all the seats are up.
The Mach-E is fun to drive. It comes in several flavors with the hotter GT versions on the way. The base model is still really fun to drive and deserves its Mustang badge. With 290 horsepower in RWD form, or 346 hp in all-wheel-drive trim, the Mach-E easily gets out of its own way. The Mach-E is a great car. It is comfortable and people like it. Tesla Model 3
Tesla’s Model 3 is a popular choice among electric car shoppers, and for good reason. It is great to drive, cool to look at, and offers both a killer range and a very active community of owners. But because it is more expensive than the other one, there are some problems. And there are not enough service centers in some places. But it was still our 2nd place champion.
The Model 3 is a good car. It has electric power and can pass other cars. Its engine is more powerful than it should be, and the chassis is much better than it looks like it would be. The inside of this car is not that fancy. But there are two parts that have lots of storage space. It is a Tesla car. And it offers the best range in class, which is awesome. The cheapest version of this car will drive 263 miles before needing to be charged. But if you buy the Long Range version, then it will go 353 miles before needing a charge. This is less time spent at chargers!
On paper, the Porsche Taycan is a bit of a tough sell. It’s expensive (it’s a Porsche) and its range estimate doesn’t look very good. It is fun to drive a Taycan. My family has one and it is the best electric car ever! The range of this car is just right for a lot of driving. It is very good quality and easy to drive.
Presently, you can’t do much with a Taycan. You will be able to go up to 227 miles in the 4S trim with the performance battery. Even if that were totally accurate in the real world, that’s still enough for most people. The Taycan has a driving experience where it is better than any other electric car on sale now. Tesla Model S
In the jungle, there is no arguing that right now Tesla’s Model S is the king. It has a long-range and it is well-known for its quality control issues. There is a new and improved version of the car. It is better than the old one. But it is better than the Taycan.
Tesla cannot compete with Porsche when it comes to driving dynamics or building quality. But Tesla has a lot of name recognition. Tesla is still a comfortable and powerful luxury car. If you want to do long drives without having to stop and charge, then this is the car for you.
The new Plaid Plus is also fast, but it is even faster than the old version. Tesla claims that it will go a long way on a charge and will have a lot of power. But we don’t know if this is true. It would be nice if it was, but we don’t know for sure.
Hyundai Kona Electric
Many people are looking for cars that are affordable. You can find these in electric vehicles. Electric cars still cost more than regular cars. But there are many good ones that cost less than $50,000. Our favorite among these is the Hyundai Kona Electric. We picked the Kona because it offers a great range, a practical small-SUV-style body, and a stellar warranty.
The Kona Electric is a good car because it goes very far. It has 201 horsepower and 258 miles range, which is more than most families need. This car has lots of space inside. It has 19.2 cubic feet when all the seats are up. And it also has many creature comforts that you can get if you buy this car. Don’t even get us started on the warranty. If you can live with the styling (we like it) and you can stretch your buck far enough, the Kona is an almost perfect first EV.
Tesla Model 3
We have talked about our problems with Model 3’s quality. But it is the price that really makes it worse. The cheapest Model 3 car you can buy is $37,990. But it doesn’t have paint that isn’t white or any of the driver aids in the Full Self-Driving package. The range is good though, even in a basic format 263 miles, and so is the driving experience, hence our second place.
The Model 3 is a car that has a lot of space. The car has two trunks. It is also sleek and stylish, but some people might not like it as much as an SUV or a hatchback. The Model Y could serve this need, but we haven’t driven it, so we can’t recommend it. We also worry about how well the Model 3 will hold up to a family with kids, even with its basic interior.
Maybe you are shopping for your first EV and have more money to spend. For a good EV, we recommend the Porsche Taycan. It’s comfortable, fast, practical, and highly configurable. The real-world range is much better than the EPA estimate, too, so it’s going to work for most people. This is a really good car. It’s one that we all like and it can’t be beat.
The Taycan Turbo S is a car that makes you feel like you live in a big house. It has lots of power and an excellent interior. With 750 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 2.6 seconds, you’ll rarely find yourself bored behind the wheel. Even if you get bored, Porsches’ excellent infotainment system is easy to live with. Ford Mustang Mach-E
Maybe you’re specifically shopping for an electric SUV. There just aren’t that many to choose from yet and many of those that are currently available are kind of small. To help you find a car, we recommend the Ford Mustang Mach-E. This car has space for lots of things. It also has plenty of room for people to sit. It is good on gas and it is not too expensive.
SUVs are popular right now, so Ford’s plan to make its first electric vehicle an SUV is a good one. It is better for the Blue Oval that the Mach-E is such a nice car and easy to live with. Despite its rakish shape and sporty badge, the Mach-E should be a super practical midsize EV that almost any family would have no trouble living with. Audi’s E-Tron is one of the cars that doesn’t seem very good on paper but once you drive it for a while, it seems worth the money. It’s made by Germans, so it’s good. It also has a nice interior. It’s a well-considered first effort from Audi and even though it lacks huge range capability, it’s a compelling car with all the practicality of an SUV. This car has 28.5 cubic feet of space for your things. It is not the first place because its cost kept it from being first place.
We also liked the Audi E-Tron Sportback but we had to get the SUV for practical reasons. The SUV is practical. It is the right size to fit a family and their stuff, and it is easy to get around in. It feels like an Audi car. When you drive it, you feel like you are in the future with the noise too. I really like this car! This car is fun to drive, but you can’t be noisy. The car has good power and an all-wheel drive. If you have enough money to buy it, then you’ll be happy with it.
