Causes And Solutions To The Problem

Sooner or later, any driver may face the problem of engine overheating. Most often, the engine temperature reaches a critical level in hot summer weather and / or when driving in sluggish traffic jams, and even the owners of modern and expensive cars are not cleaned from this.

The consequences of motor overheating can be very different. In the best case, it will be temporarily impossible to continue driving the car, and the driver will have to wait until the temperature of the power unit returns to normal. At worst, a serious engine breakdown can occur, and then the car will have to be reanimated with the help of expensive repairs.

By the way, the engines of many modern cars are afraid of high temperatures, and after 10-15 minutes of overheating, the pistons can melt in them. And if the temperature was critical for at least 20-30 minutes, then the owner should prepare for the GB curvature, the formation of cracks, the burnout of the gaskets and the destruction of the inter-ring partitions.

With prolonged overheating (more than half an hour), the consequences can be even more dire. For example, there is a sharp risk that the motor will become completely unusable due to the piston breaking through the block wall, or the crankshaft may break.

Naturally, none of the motorists wants to take matters to extremes, but how to understand that a car engine is overheating and what to do to bring its operating temperature back to normal?

What are the causes of engine overheating?

Note that being completely serviceable, the car copes with the cooling of the power unit without anyone’s help, so overheating of the engine first of all indicates the presence of problems in the cooling system. The latter on modern cars consists of many different parts, while the release of any of them can lead to a noticeable decrease in cooling efficiency. What can break?

Most often, a fan fails in the cooling system. If its blades do not spin, then it stops driving air to the radiator. Fan problems can occur due to faults in the sensor, clutch, or motor.

The cause of engine overheating can also be a breakdown of the thermostat, which often “jams” in the closed position, as well as failure of the water pump. Plus, depressurization of the cooling system can also occur, that is, a coolant leak.

However, sometimes the motor can overheat even if all its cooling systems are in working order. This can happen in hot summer weather if there is, for example, a dirty radiator, which seems to be doing its job, but at the same time is far from functioning 100%. In addition, the driver himself can cause overheating when constantly driving in low gears and at high revs.

On the dashboard of some cars, there is a special scale that shows the current engine temperature. If its arrow is in the red zone, then this is a clear sign of overheating of the power plant.

However, most modern cars lack such a scale, but their tidy has a corresponding light that lights up when critical temperatures are reached, while its operation is often accompanied by sound signals, so it is almost impossible not to notice such an alarm.

Overheating of the engine may also be indicated by the appearance in the cabin of a pungent odor, which occurs as a result of the boiling of the coolant. The most striking symptom that the engine temperature is at a critical level is the appearance of steam from under the hood of the car.

If you notice that the temperature of the power unit has become critical, then you should immediately turn off the engine of the car and wait for a while, since continuing to move can significantly aggravate the situation by running into expensive repairs.

Note that by adding coolant, you can stabilize the temperature faster, but pouring cold water on the engine, as some motorists do in panic, is by no means worth it, as this can lead to cracks in the structure of the power unit.

If the overheating of the motor caught you in the middle of a city traffic jam, then the movement should still be stopped and remain at idle, and to cool the motor, set the highest fan speed and turn on the stove to the maximum temperature.

Thanks to this, the heater fan will partially remove heat from the engine to the passenger compartment, which will allow the engine temperature to return to normal much faster than during normal idle time. In order not to “fry” the driver and passengers, all the windows should be opened in the cabin.

Whenever possible, try to get out of the traffic jam by driving onto a section of open road. The movement will contribute to additional airflow to the radiator engine, but the speed must be picked up at low revs (up to 2,000 rpm).

When the engine temperature finally returns to normal, the driver should go to the nearest service station, or call a tow truck.
