Expert Opinion About The Car After A Test Drive

To journalist Vladimir Melnikov from the publication “Auto Review” was lucky to be one of the first to ride a Renault Duster 2 generation crossover assembled in Russia on local roads. What conclusions did he draw from the introductory test drive?

First of all, the observer noted that the exterior of the model remained recognizable (especially in the front), although the car body is completely new. The car received reflex halogen headlights and stylish taillights, which in top trim levels have a diode “stuffing”. Plus, 17-inch wheels are available for the crossover, although the outer diameter on them is the same as on the standard 16-inch ones.

Since the dimensions of the car have practically not changed, the interior roominess has remained approximately at the same level. Consequently, tall people will be cramped in the second row. But the rear passengers have a two-stage sofa heating and a pair of USB connectors. In turn, the long-awaited steering wheel adjustment for reach is designed to please the driver, even if the range is small.

The line of power units of the new Duster is represented by five motors at once, while on a test drive the car was with a top-end 1.3-liter turbo engine (150 hp), six-speed mechanics and all-wheel drive. The geometric cross-country ability of the model has not changed: the angles of entry and exit here are still equal to 31 and 33 degrees, respectively, and under the bottom – 212 mm of free space.

Sitting behind the wheel of the crossover, Melnikov first of all noted the almost silent operation of the engine – instead of it, the heater fan hums unpleasantly in the cabin. In general, the acoustic comfort of the novelty is decent: you can calmly talk even at 120 km / h. During the test drive, the journalist made several attempts to accelerate from a standstill.

In the best of them, the acceleration time from 0-100 km / h was 11.6 seconds. At the same time, the expert noticed that the presence of 150 “horses” under the hood is still not felt. In addition, the car responds with a slight delay to pressing the gas pedal. However, Duster is not positioned as a “race” – this car has always been appreciated for something else. For example, for the comfortable chassis settings.

On a car in a new body, the suspension still confidently digests significant flaws in the roadway, and even when driving through large joints, unpleasant blows are practically not transmitted to the steering wheel. But the vibration background from the road “little things” is still present and quite noticeable, although the overall smoothness of the model is still at a very high level.

Driving around the test site, Vladimir Melnikov noticed that when driving at a speed of 100 km / h in sixth gear, the engine holds about 2,000 rpm, which is quite economical, and when overtaking and switching to fourth gear, the engine spins up to 4,000 rpm min.

Separately, the expert noted the process of cornering on the Renault Duster 2: the Frenchman took turns on a snowy road very willingly, while remaining completely under control. By the way, the steering wheel here has become noticeably lighter and pleases with good feedback and information content.

The matter was not limited to the track alone, and the journalist also rolled on the snow-covered dirt road. The new Duster coped with this test with dignity, although the thrust of the new turbo engine was not enough everywhere, and due to periodic slippages, an inscription on the overheating of the all-wheel drive appeared on the display of the on-board computer. However, the latter is a kind of protection “from the fool”, and as such, overheating may well not be.
