At the end of May 1919, Ferrari presented the new SF90 Stradale coupe. The two-door is the Italian brand’s first plug-in hybrid and is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Scuderia Ferrari racing team, as reflected in the model’s name. A year and a half later, a spider joined him.
The manufacturer notes that the design of the new Ferrari SF90 Stradale is a “radical evolution” of the brand’s sports cars over the past 20 years. The front of the car is characterized by the presence of narrow LED matrix headlights, under which there are slots for air ducts that provide effective cooling of the brakes.
In profile, the model is remembered by the short “beak” of the hood, curved windshield with thin front pillars, as well as embossed wheel arches. The supercar received aerodynamic side “skirts” and high side air intakes. Aft, Camaro-style headlights, a massive diffuser and centrally located circular exhaust pipes are striking.
Note that the new Ferrari supercar has received active aerodynamics. In particular, the section of the rear fairing of the coupe is a movable shut-off Gurney flap, which is recessed downwards, thereby changing the direction of the air flow. It is reported that when driving at a speed of 250 km / h, the two-door generates 390 kg of downforce.
The interior of the Ferrari SF90 Stradale is also made to match the exterior. The car received a 16.0-inch digital tidy, in the center of which a tachometer is drawn, and navigation and information system data are displayed on the sides of it. The head-up display on the windshield is used to display additional information.
The three-spoke steering wheel with a beveled bottom rim has touch-sensitive buttons with haptic feedback. Plus, the Italians provided separate touchpads for climate control and light control, and the transmission selector located on the central tunnel was stylized as the gearshift mechanism that was on Ferrari cars of past years.
The SF90 Stradale supercar has received a completely new chassis and body, while their construction is ubiquitous using carbon fiber. The Italians report that they were able to increase the flexural rigidity of the chassis by 20% and torsional rigidity by 40%. Since the main units are located slightly lower than usual, the center of gravity also dropped slightly, which is why the cockpit was 20 mm closer to the ground.
As for the technical stuffing, for the first time in the last 30 years, Italians have decided to equip their flagship model with a V8 engine instead of a V12. We are talking about the F154 engine with a 90-degree block camber, which is equipped with many Ferrari models.
Especially for the SF90 Stradale, this power unit was modernized, increasing its volume from 3.9 to 4.0 liters, and the cylinder diameter from 86.5 to 88 mm. Plus, the engine received a new direct fuel injection system at a pressure of 350 bar, a revised cooling system and electronic control of the wastegate wastegate.
As a result, the performance of the 4.0-liter engine increased to 780 hp. and 800 Nm. For comparison, on the F8 Tributo model, such a motor produces 720 forces and 770 Nm of torque. At the same time, the new two-door is additionally equipped with three electric motors. One of them is located between the internal combustion engine and the gearbox, and the other two are located on the front wheels.
The latter have an independent control system, which allowed the engineers to implement a thrust vector control system. In total, the electric motors develop 220 hp, which means that the peak output of the power plant of the novelty reaches 1,000 forces.
In terms of transmission, the car is equipped with a new eight-speed robot with two clutches, which is more compact and lighter than the previous one. The firm reports that its use has reduced the switching time from 300 to 200 ms. At the same time, there is no reverse gear in the box at all – the reverse is completely electric, and the front electric motors are used for this, while the internal combustion engine is automatically deactivated.
Due to the 270kg hybrid tuning, the new Ferrari SF90 Stradale weighs in at a hefty 1,570kg (by comparison, the F8 Tributo weighs just 1,330kg). Despite this, the two-door “shoots” from zero to a hundred in 2.5 seconds (- 0.4), and the bar of 200 km / h obeys 6.7 seconds after the start (- 1.1). The coupe has a top speed of 340 km / h.
The heavier Spyder (1,691 kg) with a folding hard top, which transforms in 14 seconds, turned out to be as fast as the original coupe – the acceleration time to hundreds and the top speed are completely identical. And only in acceleration from 0 to 200 km / h the car with a folding roof turned out to be a little slower – 7.0 seconds (+ 0.3), even the braking distance from one hundred kilometers per hour to a complete stop is the same for them – 29.5 meters.
By activating the front-wheel drive eDrive mode, the new Italian supercar can be operated purely on electric traction, but the 7.9 kWh lithium-ion battery will not let you roam. Its charge is only enough for 25 km, while the maximum speed of the car in the electric preset is limited to 135 km / h.
In addition to eDrive mode, the driver can activate the Hybrid, Performance and the most extreme Quality options. Each of them uses its own algorithms for the operation of the hybrid system and the recuperation system.
The company has paid great attention to the issue of cooling the hybrid power plant. In particular, in the front in the center of the car there is a radiator that cools the electric motors and inverters, and on the sides there are two more radiators for the internal combustion engine and the gearbox.
Interestingly, the Assetto Fiorano track package can also be ordered for the supercar. It includes the installation of carbon fiber doors and additional aerodynamic elements, titanium springs and exhaust system, as well as other shock absorbers and special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. As a result, the weight will be reduced by 30 kg.
Of the “smart” electronics, the revised slide control system deserves mention. Here it is called electronic Side Slip Control (eSSC) and also works with electric motors. The brakes are also controlled by electronics, which automatically distributes work between the hydraulic mechanisms and the recuperation system.
The sales of the new Ferrari SF90 Stradale began at the end of 2019. The Italians did not limit the circulation of the model, and its cost starts at $ 625,000. The Spyder will cost even more, with the optional Assetto Fiorano parquet flooring, featuring a redesigned suspension, lightweight titanium components, carbon fiber body panels and a wing, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and a two-tone paint job.
Acceptance of orders for a supercar in Russia was opened only at the end of the twentieth year, when ordering a car in December, its cost will be 36 million rubles, and later the price tag will be increased to an impressive 41 million – and this is without taking into account the numerous expensive options! Deliveries of the first cars to customers will begin in September 2021.
