The Koreans from KIA recently unveiled a new development strategy “Plan S” and now shared information about the brand’s fresh design style, dubbed “Opposite United”.
During the online conference, the chief designer of KIA Karim Habib said that this direction will be used in one way or another in all new models of the South Korean brand.
Note that Khabib became the chief designer of Kia only in the nineteenth year, replacing Peter Schreier. The style concept developed by the latter was very successful, but the Koreans decided to move on.
As a result, the EV6 electric off-road hatchback became the first production model of KIA in a new style, on the appearance of which specialists from the Korean, German and American design studios of the brand worked.
This electric car is radically different from the previous brand cars. In particular, there is no proprietary radiator grille “Tiger Nose”, while the “face” itself is made in the style called “Digital Tiger Face”. By the way, the characteristic pattern of running lights is here called to resemble the “digital face of a tiger”.
The new KIA EV6 has unusual body proportions with a low bonnet and a long wheelbase. The developers managed to achieve them due to the features of the E-GMP electromobile platform.
As for the interior, the electric car received upholstery from recycled materials, as well as large displays of digital dashboards and a multimedia system, placed on a single panel without a visor. Also, the model is characterized by the presence of a block of “hot” touch keys with two rotating handles on the sides. It is located under the central ventilation deflectors and is used to control the main functions of the car.
Kia’s chief designer noted that such a front panel design is better suited for cars crammed with numerous electronic assistants (for example, with adaptive cruise control and autopilot). The new layout supposedly distracts the driver less on screens and touch buttons, but at the same time contributes to a higher personalization of cars.
Note that the Korean specialists did not completely abandon the analog buttons in the interior of the electric car, retaining the physical keys on the steering wheel, the block to the left of it and the central tunnel, which is here separated from the front panel.
During an online conference, Karim Khabib noted that not all future Kia cars will be similar to the EV6. According to him, some iconic models will even receive the old “tiger nose”, as the latter is the most recognizable element of the South Korean brand.
The situation will be the same with the interiors of new cars, that is, some KIAs will still retain the usual layout of the front panel with analog climate control buttons. At the same time, the chief designer noted that the future belongs to sensors, and there is no getting away from this.
Information about the technical stuffing of the new KIA EV6 has not yet been announced. The Koreans will voice her during the official premiere of the model, scheduled for late March 2021.
