After a 37-year hiatus, in 2004 Maserati returned to big racing with the MC12 GT1 racing coupe for the FIA GT Championship. At the same time, according to the rules of the competition, in order to admit this model to participate, it was necessary to release at least 25 road cars.

This is how the Maserati MC12 supercar was born, based on the chassis and monocoque from the sister Ferrari Enzo. In 2004, the Italians built 30 cars, five of which were not intended for sale, and a year later another 25 copies were produced. Thus, a total of fifty compartments went into the hands of private owners.

Compared to Enzo, the Maserati MC12 is bigger in all directions. The overall length of the car is 5,143 mm, width – 2,100, height – 1,205, and their wheelbase is identical – it is equal to 2,800 millimeters. MC12 weight – 1,335 kg.

The design of the Maserati MC12 was developed in the Giugiaro studio, the lines of the car’s body contours turned out to be smoother than those of the Ferrari Enzo. Due to this, it was possible to achieve a lower drag coefficient.

True, in terms of technical and dynamic characteristics, Maserati is still inferior to Ferrari, since in the hierarchy of models of the Fiat concern it takes place one step lower. That is why the same 6.0-liter V12 engine develops all 650 hp on the Enzo and only 630 on the MC12, and the torque is reduced from 657 to 652 Nm.

The semi-automatic transmission on the Maserati MC 12 is also borrowed from Enzo. It transfers traction to the wheels of the rear axle, providing the coupe with acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 330 km / h versus 350, to which a Ferrari can accelerate.

In some instances of Maserati MC12, the roof can be removed (targa-type body), but not in all. At the same time, all copies of the model lack a trunk, a rear window and a stereo system (even the possibility of its after-sales installation is not provided). All this became the main reasons for criticism of the MC12, as well as the too high price – over 700,000 euros.

But the supercar’s handling is good. A low center of gravity, well-thought-out aerodynamics with high downforce acting on a wide body, good weight distribution along the axes – all this made it possible to complete a circle on the Top Gear track in 1 minute and 18.9 seconds, surpassing the result of Ferrari Enzo by 0.1 seconds.

And the debut in the races was very successful. In the very first season, the pilots in the Maserati MC12 managed to win the race, and in 2005 the factory team won the FIA GT1 Championship. In addition, the racing MC12s have taken part in the Italian GT, Super GT and American Le Mans Series.

Maserati MC12 Corsa

In mid-2006, Maserati unveiled the MC12 Corsa supercar, based on the MC12 GT1 racing variant and designed exclusively for track driving. In total, only twelve of these machines were built, each of which was sold for a million dollars.

At the same time, by analogy with the Ferrari FXX program, all cars are kept by the manufacturer and can be delivered to any race track at the owner’s request. Although one of them was still able to legally obtain the right to drive the Maserati MC12 Corsa on public roads.

Externally, this modification differs from the usual MC12 with a shortened nose section, massive rear wing and a body painted in Blue Victory blue (at the client’s request, the color could still be changed to any other).

But the technical stuffing of the special version is borrowed from the racing version. The twelve-cylinder engine produces 755 hp here. at 8,000 rpm, gearbox – sequential Cambiocorsa, brakes are made of steel and carbon fiber, while there is no ABS. And the weight of the model has been reduced to 1,150 kg.

The dynamic performance of the Maserati MC12 Kors has not been specified, but there is no doubt that they are outstanding.
