The Germans re-updated the Mercedes-Benz CLS (C257) sedan, and as part of the current restyling, the model received a modified exterior and interior, as well as a revised range of engines.
The restyled Mercedes CLS 2021 model year has a slightly different front bumper and a radiator grill, the pattern of which now seems to consist of many miniature three-beam stars. At the same time, on the CLS 53 4Matic + version, the grille is “toothy”.
The updated four-door is also characterized by the presence of a new diffuser and other wheels. Plus, one cannot fail to note the expanded color palette of the model: from now on, cars can be ordered in blue metallic. At the same time, the company did not touch the controversial design of the rear lights.
As for the interior, a new steering wheel has become available for the sedan, and on the base cars it is a three-spoke with a glossy finish, and on versions with the AMG package it has double spokes. New interior finishes using open-cell wood veneer have also been prepared for the model.
There were also a lot of technical changes. In particular, the CLS 300d modification will now include a seriously modernized OM654M four-cylinder turbodiesel. Due to the increased piston stroke, the engine volume reached 1,993 cubes (+ 43), and the injection pressure increased to 2,700 bar (+ 200). In addition, the unit was equipped with new pistons with developed oil channels.
All this ultimately made it possible to increase the output of such an engine to 265 hp. (+ 20) and 550 Nm (+ 50). Interestingly, during the restyling for the CLS 300d modification, the permanent all-wheel drive 4Matic also became available, while earlier this version was exclusively rear-wheel drive.
The car can still be ordered in diesel versions CLS 220d with a 2.0-liter engine (194 hp) and CLS 400d 4Matic with a 2.9-liter engine (330 hp), while the Germans abandoned CLS 350d 4Matic with a six-cylinder turbodiesel with 286 horsepower.
There are no changes among the petrol modifications. Here you can choose from either the rear-wheel drive CLS 350 with a 2.0-liter engine (299 hp), or the all-wheel drive CLS 450 4Matic with a 3.0-liter engine (367 hp).
The flagship is the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic +, which is driven by a 3.0-liter inline turbo six, boosted to 435 “horses”. This version has a plug-in all-wheel drive with a clutch on the front axle. The car is capable of accelerating from zero to hundreds in 4.5 seconds and has a drift mode, when activated, the clutch will be forcibly opened.
Without exception, all versions of the new CLS come with a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic machine. At the same time, in the European market, half of the listed modifications are equipped with a 48-volt hybrid EQ-Boost system. The starter-generator is integrated directly into the automatic transmission here, which allowed the Germans to minimize the number of wires and communications.
The electric motor helps the internal combustion engine in the first seconds of acceleration, and also acts as a “start-stop” system. Interestingly, it generates 22 hp on petrol versions. and 250 Nm, and on the diesel CLS 300d its output is 20 forces and 200 Nm of torque.
European sales of the Mercedes CLS will start in July twenty-first. At the same time, restyled cars will appear on the Russian market, prices will be announced later.
