At a special event in Sweden, the German automaker unveiled its first all-electric production crossover, the Mercedes EQC, with its world premiere at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October.
Outside, the new model Mercedes EQC 2019 resembles the concept of the same name two years ago, but still does not repeat it exactly. The SUV received a wide glossy front panel that combines the head optics and the radiator grille, or rather its image.
Unlike the prototype, the production-ready electric car was equipped with traditional door handles and rear-view mirrors, and the rear lights were made narrower. The shape of the rear lighting here is reminiscent of the new Cayenne.
To improve aerodynamics, the company decided to abandon the installation of roof rails on the Mercedes-Benz EQC, and all wheel options (available with a diameter of 19 to 21 ″) were optimized to reduce aerodynamic drag. It is noteworthy that in the rear bumper of the SUV there is an imitation of exhaust pipes.
In the interior of the new Mercedes-Benz EQC, almost everything is familiar from other models of the brand. Behind the three-spoke relay wheel with small touch panels on its spokes are two 10.25-inch displays – the left one is responsible for rendering the graphics of the virtual instrument panel, and the right one displays navigation, or the MBUX multimedia system menu with voice control function.
A distinctive feature of the crossover can only be called the central rectangular ventilation system ducts, to the left of which there is an electric car start button. By the way, when ordering the package “Electric Art”, the strips of these ducts will be covered with rose gold. Plus, AMG Line packages are available for the exterior and interior of the model.
The presence of the latter on the outside provides for the installation of other bumpers, a differently designed grille, a diffuser in the rear bumper and special wheels, and inside there will be sports seats with leather upholstery, carbon fiber inserts, microfiber floor mats with a steering wheel with a rim truncated at the bottom.
In terms of its overall dimensions, the Mercedes EQC 2019 turned out to be close to the GLC SUV – they have a common wheelbase (2,873 mm), while the length of the novelty is 4,761 (+ 105), width – 1,884 (- 6), height – 1,624 ( – 15), but the mass of the electric car due to the batteries is significantly higher – 2,420 kg.
The electric crossover Mercedes is driven by two electric motors located on the front and rear axles. Their total output is 407 hp. (300 kilowatts) and 765 Nm of torque, providing the all-wheel drive with acceleration from zero to hundred in 5.1 seconds, top speed is limited to 180 km / h.
The engines are powered by a set of lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 80 kWh, located under the floor. The mass of the batteries alone is 650 kg, the declared power reserve of a fully charged EQC reaches about 450 kilometers (according to the European NEDC cycle), but so far this is only preliminary data.
Depending on the capacity of the charging station, the company promises that in 40 minutes it will be possible to replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent. The main thing is that the manufacturer took care of the ability to recharge the car at almost any station, plus buyers will be offered to purchase their own home charging station.
In addition, a network of IONITY stations is being deployed in Europe, which by 2020 should have about 400 points for recharging. This project is being implemented jointly by Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, Porsche and Volkswagen.
Another feature of the Mercedes EQC is the braking energy recovery system, which provides five modes of operation – from automatic to maximum efficiency. The latter allows you not to touch the brake pedal at all, so much the electric car begins to slow down when you release the current pedal.
In this case, the electronics can display prompts on the head-up display, focusing on the data of the navigation system, the function of recognizing road signs and the presence of other vehicles around and the distance to them.
What is the price
The production of the new Mercedes EQC will be set up at a plant in Bremen, Germany, and then at the Beijing Benz Automotive joint venture in China. The start of sales of the model is scheduled for 2019, but the exact timing of the appearance of cars from dealers has not yet been specified.
There is no information about the price of the crossover, but it can be assumed that the starting price will be at the level of the electric crossover Audi e-tron, which will cost at least 80,000 euros. It is possible that Mears will be a little more expensive.
