The Porsche 959 is a high-tech sports coupe that is rightfully considered one of the best sports cars of the eighties, along with its key competitor in the form of Ferrari F40.

The first prototype of the model was called Porsche Group B. It was presented at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept, like the serial Porsche 911, received a mid-engine layout. However, in other technical aspects, when creating the Porsche 959, German specialists tried to get away from the 911 model as far as possible.

The new Porsche 959 Coupe was developed specifically for participation in the Group B competition. This is the legendary rally championship, which in its golden years was a kind of Formula 1, only in off-road conditions.

That is why the car received an all-wheel drive system and an independent racing suspension. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Porsche 959 was received with enthusiasm, but a civilian version was initially out of the question.

An interesting fact. While Porsche was developing its rally bomb, Group B was banned by the FIA ​​after terrible accidents with Ford and Lancia cars.

Thus, the Germans in a Porsche 959 Group B had to participate in the Paris-Dakar races and the Pharaoh Rally marathon. At the same time, the new model allowed them to win both championships in 1985.

And later, in the same year, the production version of the Porsche 959 coupe debuted. True, the start of its production was delayed due to large-scale workers’ strikes. As a result, the first production copies of the 959 were released only in 1987.

The exterior of the Porsche 959 was designed by Luigi Colani, an experienced designer who later became one of the authors of the exterior of the Chevrolet Corvette. When developing the design of the German car, it was within a very narrow framework set by the engineers and designers of Porsche. However, this did not stop Kolani from making a muscular and cute car with a memorable appearance.

The Porsche 959 received the most streamlined body, devoid of sharp corners and protruding parts. In addition to a front bumper with a large air intake and a large wing at the rear, the car has a large number of vents on the sides. All this is done for more efficient cooling of the motor.

The Porsche 959 is powered by a 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine. The use of two turbochargers made it possible to increase its power to 450 horsepower, and the maximum torque reaches 500 Nm.

A high-tech engine with a Bosch Motronic injection system, 24 valves, 4 camshafts and chain drives is paired with a 6-speed manual. The latter is complemented by a smart electronic Control Clutch.

The Porsche 959 spends 3.7 seconds to accelerate from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour (up to two hundred – 13.0 seconds), and the top speed of the coupe is 317 km / h.

Simplicity or Luxury?

The car was sold in two versions: Comfort and Sport. The first version has a leather interior, and the equipment includes central locking, air conditioning and power windows.

The sports option is devoid of all sorts of amenities. This modification was intended for true fans of racing cars with a simple but highly functional interior.

Serial assembly of the Porsche 959 was completed in 1988. In total, 200 units of this model were born. At the time of its debut, the Porsche 959 was priced at $ 225,000. The official successor to the car is the Porsche Carrera GT supercar.
