The Rivian R1S electric full-size SUV world premiered at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Like the R1T pickup, the new model from the American manufacturer is marketed as an Electric Adventure Vehicle.
Rivian R1C has a brutal exterior with vertical blocks of low and high beam. The silhouette of the car seems to have been cut down with an ax, and at the stern, the “encircling” block of lanterns catches the eye. The rear door of the SUV is double-winged, with a small tailgate, allowing you to have a picnic if necessary.
As for the interior, the inside of the new Rivian R1S was equipped with a virtual device and a large touchscreen of the multimedia system. At the same time, there are practically no physical buttons in the cabin.
Compared to the pickup, the Rivian R1S received more expensive finishing materials. The cabin itself is designed for seven passengers, while in order to increase roominess, the designers had to abandon the cache under the second row of seats.
Built on the so-called “skateboard” platform, the SUV has a compact layout and a low center of gravity. The overall length of the vehicle is 5,040 mm, the width is 2,015, and the wheelbase is 3,075. The SUV weighs 3.5 tons and is capable of pulling a trailer of the same weight.
The Rivian R1S uses a double-wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link at the rear. Adaptive dampers and air bellows are included as standard. The declared ground clearance is 205 mm, and when the off-road mode is activated, it can be increased to 365 mm. All this allows you to storm fords up to a meter deep and drive up slopes up to 45 degrees.
The trunk volume of the model has not yet been revealed, but underground there is an additional 180-liter compartment. Plus, the electric SUV has a front trunk, which the company calls frunk (derived from the front trunk). It has a capacity of 330 liters and has an electrically operated lid.
The Rivian R1S is driven by four electric motors at once, and each of them is responsible for the rotation of a separate wheel and has an independent control unit, which allowed the creators to implement thrust vector control and imitation of differential locks.
Each of the motors is capable of developing up to 200 hp, working in conjunction with a gearbox, however, the rated output of the motors is limited depending on the specific modification of the model. By default, the engines give out a total of 408 forces (560 Nm), and they receive power from a 105 kWh battery, the charge of which is enough for 386 km.
The output of the engines of the “average” configuration is 764 hp. and 1 120 Nm. It uses a 135 kWh battery that provides a cruising range of 500 kilometers. It is curious that the “top” version turned out to be somewhat weaker – its electric motors produce 710 “horses” and 1,120 Nm of torque.

But it is equipped with two batteries at once with a total capacity of 180 kWh, where an additional unit is installed in the place of the third row of seats. Such an SUV is available exclusively in a five-seater version and is capable of driving up to 660 km without recharging.
You can replenish the stock of batteries from a “fast” terminal with a capacity of up to 160 kW. A half-hour stay at such a station will allow the car to travel an additional 320 kilometers. It is not known how long it will take to recharge the batteries from a regular electrical outlet.
The maximum speed of all modifications of the Rivian R1S is limited to 201 km / h, while the acceleration time from zero to hundreds is different. The “average” version turned out to be the fastest, which takes this bar in 3.0 seconds. The “top” modification requires 3.2 seconds, and the base one – 4.9 seconds.
Another feature of the electric Rivian R1S is the highway autopilot, which is able to independently control the car on the highway. The start of the sale of the model is scheduled for 2021, and long-range modifications will appear first, and the basic ones will have to wait until 2022. Prices for the electric car will start at $ 65,000.
