Tesla introduced the updated Model S and Model X electric cars. During the restyling, the appearance of the liftback and crossover has changed slightly. In particular, both cars received new bumpers, and the front one no longer has foglights.
Americans ditched chrome decor in favor of dark accents that can be seen on door handles, window moldings and the fifth door. Plus, new wheels became available for cars, and the crossover additionally acquired other lights.
The interior changes for the 2021 Tesla Model S and Model X were far more significant. First of all, American electric cars became the first production cars in the world to receive a full-fledged steering wheel instead of a standard steering wheel.
From a design point of view, this innovation looks stylish, but its practicality and usability raise certain questions. The fact is that the steering mechanism has not changed, which means that it is still necessary to steer with interceptions.
Interestingly, this steering wheel has touch buttons and drums on the spokes. They play the role of paddle shifters here, which the manufacturer also refused during restyling.
In addition, the multimedia system of electric cars has undergone modernization. The branded vertical tablet in the center of the front panel has given way to a 17.0-inch monitor. The latter not only pleases with a high resolution (2,200 x 1,300), but also has increased brightness and contrast.
The digital gadget has also been updated with a 12.3-inch standalone screen. Plus, the designers “disguised” the ventilation deflectors on the front panel, so that now they are practically invisible. And also on the center console there is a platform for wireless charging of smartphones and several USB-C connectors.
On the second row of models, new seats have appeared, due to which the rear has become a little more spacious. Plus, a separate 8.0-inch display is now available for second-row passengers. It is located between the front seat backrests and can work with some game consoles. Plus, front seats with ventilation and three-zone climate control have been added to the equipment.
The upgraded Tesla Model S and Model X 2021-2022 received new electric motors. Instead of the basic Long Range Plus version, the Long Range trim is now offered, which has two engines and four-wheel drive. The total output of its units is 679 hp. (+ 115), due to which the liftback is able to accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km / h) in 3.1 seconds (-0.6), although the maximum speed is the previous 249 km / h.
The Performance modification gave way to the Plaid version, equipped with three electric motors at once. The rear wheels are equipped with individual motors, due to which the engineers were able to implement thrust vector control. In total, the three motors develop an impressive 1,034 hp.
Acceleration from 0-60 mph of this liftback is possible in 1.99 seconds (- 0.31 compared to the Performance version). The electric car travels a quarter mile (402 meters) distance in 9.23 seconds, while managing to develop 249 km / h, and the maximum speed of this modification is declared at 322 km / h. True, only on special tires, which will be installed on cars only from the fall of 2021.
The dynamic characteristics of the twin-engine Tesla Model X have not yet been named, while the top-end three-engine variant is capable of accelerating from 0-60 miles in 2.5 seconds. Its speed limit is 262 km / h. Apparently, electric cars in the initial Long Range version retained a traction battery with a capacity of 100 kWh.
The range of the updated liftback is declared at 663 km (according to the American EPA cycle), that is, increased by 16 km. The crossover is capable of covering a distance of up to 579 km. As for the three-motor versions, the battery is the same here (from the Performance version). On a liftback, the cruising range is 628 km, and on a crossover – 547 km.
Serial production of the updated Tesla Model S will begin in the next few weeks, and the release of the Model X will start a little later. The basic version of the liftback will cost $ 80,000 (6.1 million rubles at the current exchange rate), and the top-end one – $ 120,000 (9.16 million rubles). In turn, Americans ask for $ 90,000 (6.87 million rubles) for a two-engine crossover, and for a three-engine one – the same $ 120,000.
Interestingly, the Americans have already announced the Plaid + version for the Model S. Its main feature will be a new generation traction battery, which will provide over 840 kilometers of mileage on a single charge. Such a car will cost $ 140,000 (10.7 million rubles).
