The American company Tesla Motors introduced its first model in 2006 – an all-electric Roadster. The body and chassis for it were borrowed from the Lotus Elise model, but the technical filling here is completely different.
Production of the first serial Tesla Roadster variants for sale began in 2008. The electric vehicle is driven by a 248-horsepower three-phase four-pole electric motor, which develops a maximum torque of 270 Nm.
Traction is transmitted to the wheels of the rear axle through a single-stage transmission developed by BorgWarner. From zero to hundreds of Tesla Roadster accelerates in 4.9 seconds, and the maximum speed is electronically limited to 200 km / h.
At the motor show in Detroit 2009, the Tesla Roadster modification debuted with the Sport prefix. Its key feature was a modernized engine, the output of which was increased to 288 hp, which made it possible to reduce the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h by 0.2 sec. – up to 4.7 s.
Tesla Roadster Sport
Inside the Tesla Roadster Sport, the aluminum gearshift lever has given way to a push-button mechanism, a color touchscreen appears on the center console, and high-quality leather and carbon inserts are used in the trim.
In addition, buyers of the Sport version were able to order the installation of a carbon fiber rear spoiler, a hood with slots, and an adjustable suspension on an electric car. The price of the Tesla Roadster Sport in the States at the time of its launch was $ 128,500.
Tesla Roadster 2.5
In the summer of 2012, at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed, an updated roadster, called the Tesla Roadster 2.5, was presented. It differs from the 2.0 model in a modified radiator grille and bumpers, and the rear one has an integrated diffuser.
Tesla Roadster 2.5 also sports new rims, which are available in two color options: black and silver. Inside, there are new seats, improved noise insulation due to the use of other materials in the decoration, and a 7-inch screen and a rear-view camera are available as an option.
The technical stuffing of the 2.5 model remained unchanged. A set of lithium-ion batteries is responsible for powering the electric motor, a full charge of which provides a mileage of more than 390 kilometers (the record is 501 km without recharging). In this case, the charging time of batteries from a network with a voltage of 240 volts is 3.5 hours.
The release of the Tesla Roadster model ended in 2012 due to the end of Lotus Elise car kits. But later the company said that they would release a second generation roadster, which will be built on its own platform – the shortened chassis of the Model S sedan. True, this will not happen until 2019.
Tesla Roadster 3.0
In July 2016, the Tesla Roadster electric car received a package of improvements called 3.0, which was announced at the end of 2014.This update program allows to increase the power reserve of the very first model of the brand by 35%, as a result of which, with a full charge of the batteries, you can no longer drive 390, and 550 km.
To increase the range of the electric car, customers will have to temporarily take the car to a service center, where specialists will manually reconfigure the control electronics and replace the old block of lithium-ion batteries with a new one with a capacity of 80 kWh (this is 40% more than before).
For such an improvement, Tesla Motors asks for $ 29,000, and $ 5,000 will have to be paid as a prepayment. This is the lowest possible price for an upgrade, according to company representatives, and the automaker won’t get any significant benefit from the upgrade. It is reported that Tesla specialists will be able to modify only five electric cars every week, which means that the queue for improving the cars cannot be avoided.
Recall that from 2008 to 2012, 2,500 copies of the Tesla Roadster were produced, and in 2019, the appearance of a second-generation roadster is planned, which can be built on the basis of Tesla Model 3.
