In June twenty-first, Lexus introduced the new generation NX crossover. It is interesting that the outside of the model remained as recognizable as possible, however, there were fewer sharp edges on its body.
The new model Lexus HX 2022 has retained the same “face” with a massive radiator grille and aggressive headlights. However, the form of the latter has become somewhat different, and the developers have abandoned individual strips of LED DRLs.
The fodder of the crossover has also hardly changed: of the notable innovations, it is worth noting other lights, visually united with each other by a luminous strip. As for the wheels, now the car can even be ordered with 20 “rims (previously the maximum was 18”).
By tradition, the F Sport package is available for the new NX, which implies the installation of a more aggressive body kit. By the way, the top variant of the NX 450h has it already in the base.
Despite the previous appearance, the developers report that about 95% of the parts and components of the crossover are still new, and most of the changes occurred in the interior.
The interior of the Lexus NX 2022 in a new body is now made in a style called “Tazuna”, which means “bridle” in Japanese. Its main feature is the intuitive control of all functions.
The all-terrain vehicle received a touchscreen display of the information system, and the base car is the Lexus Link Connect multimedia with a 9.8-inch monitor, and the more advanced one is the Lexus Link Pro complex with a 14.0-inch tablet.
According to the developers, the latter works 3.6 times faster than the previous top-end device, and also boasts voice control, advanced online functionality and the ability to remotely access from a smartphone.
But the company decided to abandon the touchpad or joystick-controller on the center console, so now most of the functions are controlled from the multimedia screen, which, for convenience’s sake, was shifted a little closer to the driver.
In turn, transmission control is now carried out from a non-fixed joystick, and touch panels appeared on the steering wheel spokes. In addition, 64-color contour lighting is designed to please the driver and passengers.
In addition, the new 2022 Lexus HX has unusual electric door locks, which require pressing the handle to unlock them from the inside. If smart electronics detects a danger (for example, when trying to open the door when a car is approaching in the next lane), then it will forcibly block the lock. At the same time, the developers retained the possibility of emergency mechanical door opening: for this, the mentioned handle simply needs to be pulled towards you.
The new Lexus NX 2022 body is built on the basis of the GA-K modular platform, familiar from the Toyota RAV4. The crossover’s body is stiffened by the expanded use of ultra-high-strength steels, while the front fenders and bonnet are made of aluminum.
Compared to its predecessor, the car has added in size – its overall length is 4 660 mm (+ 20), width – 1 865 (+ 20), height – 1 650 (+ 5). The wheelbase has been extended to 2 690 mm (+ 30), due to which the rear row has become somewhat more spacious. The volume of the trunk has not yet been advertised, but it is known that it is identical for all versions of the model. The fuel tank is 55 liters.
With the change of the “bogie”, the crossover track was widened and the center of gravity lowered (- 20 mm). The suspension scheme remained standard: McPherson struts in front, and a multi-link in the back. At the same time, the engineers revised the suspension settings, trying to make the control smoother and more accurate.
The basic version of the Lexus NX 200 still comes with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with 150 hp, which works in conjunction with a variator. A more advanced version of the NX 250 can be equipped with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with 199 forces and an eight-speed automatic.
The NX 350 variant has a completely new 2.4-liter turbo engine that develops 279 hp. (430 Nm) – it also has an automatic transmission in eight steps. Plus, the range includes a hybrid version of the NX 350h, where a 2.5-liter aspirated engine works in tandem with an electric motor and an electromechanical variator.
By default, the petrol-electric version is front-wheel drive, but it also has an all-wheel drive version, in which another electric motor is additionally installed on the rear axle. The total output of the units is declared at the level of 244 “horses”. Acceleration from zero to hundred – 7.7 seconds.
The flagship of the line is the Lexus NX 450h, which is the first plug-in hybrid in Lexus history. The powerplant here is the same as on the NX 350h, but the top version in the base is all-wheel drive, and the front electric motor is more powerful. Peak recoil is declared at the level of 306 forces, and acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes 6.0 seconds.
The rechargeable hybrid relies on a more capacious (18 kWh) traction battery located under the floor of the body (on the NX 350h it is under the rear sofa). On one electric traction, this option can travel up to 63 km / h, while while driving, its speed will be limited to 135 km / h.
Four-wheel drive is also available for gasoline cars, and here a conventional clutch is responsible for connecting the rear axle, which from now on works with constant preload. On electrified versions, the rear electric motor is connected at every start-off. Such decisions allowed the Japanese in a press release to declare the presence of “permanent all-wheel drive”, although the model has no center differential.
In addition, the new Lexus HX 2022 model year acquired more modern electronics. So, in some markets, the crossover in the base will be offered with the Lexus Safety System +. The latter is a semi-autopilot, which includes adaptive cruise control, as well as lane keeping and road sign recognition systems.
Off-road vehicle sales are scheduled for the fall of the twenty-first, and prices are promised to be announced by the end of the summer. It is known that only gasoline versions of the model will be offered in Russia, while hybrids should not be expected.
