Toyota introduced the Yaris Cross crossover, which, although based on the platform of the new Yaris, is, in fact, an independent model. In the lineup of the Japanese brand, the SUV will be located one step below the C-HR, while its main competitors will be Ford Puma and Nissan Juke.
Toyota Yaris Cross 2021 received a completely original body that does not have a single common panel with the original hatchback. Nevertheless, the design of the aggressive “face” is almost the same, and the side of the car differs from the compact by the presence of black linings on the wheel arches and sills, as well as a different roof line.
Plus, the car has its own design of the stern with a narrow strip of LED lights and a different bumper, and 18-inch rims are also in the base of the all-terrain Yaris. The interior architecture, with a protruding multimedia system tablet, turned out to be here, just like on the hatchback.
At the same time, the interior of the crossover has a different tidy with a large speedometer in the center, redesigned door panels and a unique design of the center console. Also, one cannot fail to note the backrest of the rear sofa, which is standardly divided into three unequal sections (40:20:40), which the hatchback is not supposed to.
The new body of the 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross is based on the GA-B modular platform, which is a variation of the TNGA architecture. In terms of dimensions, the SUV is noticeably larger than the hatch. The length of the newly made car reaches 4,180 mm (+ 240), in width – 1,765 (+ 20), in height – 1,560 (+ 90), but the distance between the axles of both cars is identical – 2,560 millimeters.
As for the ground clearance, it turned out to be 30 mm more on the subcompact SUV than on the passenger car, but the company has not yet disclosed the exact value. The volume of the trunk also remains unknown, although the Japanese said that the compartment here comes with a two-level floor.
So far, the manufacturer has declassified only a hybrid version of the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, which is driven by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder aspirated with 91 hp, an 80-horsepower electric motor and an electromechanical variator. The total output of these units reaches 116 “mares”.
The drive is front-wheel drive by default, but for a surcharge, an all-wheel drive system E-Four is offered, which provides for the installation of an additional electric motor with a power of 5.3 hp. (52 Nm) on the rear axle. The latter is connected to work only during starting, as well as in the first seconds of acceleration. A semi-independent suspension is installed on the front-wheel drives at the rear, while on the all-wheel drive there is an independent double wishbone.
In the future, the new Toyota Yaris Cross will acquire other versions, while the start of sales of the model is planned only at the beginning of 2021. The Japanese will set up the assembly of the SUV at their plant in France, where the usual Yaris is also produced. The prices for the cars are not advertised, however, the plans of the company are ambitious – in the first year of sales they are going to sell 150,000 cars.
