The commercial division of Volkswagen has declassified the new (fifth) generation Caddy van. The Germans presented the car in several versions at once, including a regular Cargo, a stretched version of Maxi Cargo and a stylish Caddy PanAmericana.
In terms of exterior design, the 2020 Volkswagen Cuddy in the new body does not differ much from its predecessor, while all the changes that have occurred to the model are of an evolutionary nature. At the front, the van received new headlights (for an additional charge LED) and a narrow radiator grille with an updated brand logo.
The shape of the front bumper has also undergone changes, while its central air intake is now made in the form of a grille with a honeycomb pattern of cells. Also, the new model is distinguished by a flat hood and a strongly inclined windshield, which made it possible to reduce the drag coefficient from 0.33 to 0.30.
For the first time, 18-inch alloy wheels are available for the VW Caddy 5 (for a surcharge), and of the innovations at the stern, it is worth noting the vertically arranged strips of LED-lights. The tailgate design varies from version to version. On the passenger version, the door is monolithic and folds upward, and on the cargo version it is a two-section hinged door. For a surcharge, an electric drive for side sliding doors and a monolithic rear door is promised.
The salon of the new Volkswagen Caddy in 2020 can have up to seven passenger seats, while the Germans report that there is much more free space in the cockpit. The design of the dashboard has been completely revised, with new multifunction steering wheel, automatic transmission lever, ergonomic seats and a keyless entry system (for the first time for the model) offered to the driver and passengers.
Plus, the car was equipped with a modern multimedia system, the screen size of which varies from 6.5 to 10.0 inches, and for a surcharge, the car can be equipped with a digital device. Other options include atmospheric interior lighting and a 1.4-square-meter sunroof.
The new body of Volkswagen Cuddy 2020-2021 is built on the modular MQB platform. Having moved to this “cart”, the van lost the springs in the rear suspension (instead of them there are now springs), and also became noticeably more spacious. The regular Cargo variant has a wheelbase of 2,755 mm and a body volume of 3.3 cubic meters. Indicators Cargo Maxi – 2 970 mm and 4 cubic meters, respectively. Thanks to this, the latter now accommodates two Euro pallets at once.
Also “heel” boasts a wide range of power units. In particular, the car can be ordered with a 2.0-liter TDI diesel, available in three boost options: 75, 102 or 122 hp. This engine is equipped with a dual AdBlue urea injection system and is considered one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world.
Plus, for the novelty, a 1.5-liter TSI petrol turbo engine with a capacity of 116 forces is proposed, and there is also a gas version of the TGI, but its performance has not yet been announced. All of these engines fully comply with the strict requirements of the “Euro 6” standard and, in comparison with the predecessor engines, have a reduced fuel consumption by an average of 12%.
They work either with a 6-speed manual transmission or with a seven-speed DSG robot, while the 4motion all-wheel drive transmission is available for the petrol version, as well as for the most powerful diesel engine. It is possible that in the future the van will acquire a mild hybrid and an all-electric version – tuners from the ABT Sportsline studio found out about their development.
Among other features of the 5th generation Volkswagen Caddy, it is worth noting the ability to equip the car with 19 different electronic assistants, among which six are completely new. For example, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go system, Trailer Assist and blind spot monitoring are available for the model.
The start of European sales of the new Caddy is scheduled for the first half of the twentieth year, while the first copies of the model will reach Russia no earlier than 2021. There is no information on the trim levels and prices of the car yet.
