At the end of October two thousand nineteen, a presentation of the new Volkswagen Golf of the 8th generation took place, the premiere of which was previously postponed several times for various reasons. The Russian representative office of the brand said that the car will reach Russia, but the sales start date is only the end of the twentieth year.
In terms of design, the new body of the Volkswagen Golf 2021 has retained the common features of its predecessor, although it has acquired many original solutions. The first thing that catches the eye is a narrow head optics with small “tails” overlapping the front fenders and a fashionable DRL pattern.

The hatchback grille is even smaller than before, and the brand’s updated logo flaunts in the center. The front bumper on the Volkswagen Golf VIII has got a wide slot with three horizontal strips, the lower one being chrome-plated, and the tips of the other two painted in the body color.
On the GTE variant, the bumper has a honeycomb-style air intake, and a beautifully illuminated strip is located on the upper grille. The lanterns of the new model also became more compact and got a different pattern. The trunk lid, rear bumper and glass of the fifth door were revised.
But in profile, the hatchback most closely resembles the car of the previous generation, retaining both the shape of the side glazing and the wide rear pillar, except that the stamping now “cuts” the door handles and the rims flaunt a new design. Note that already in the database all the lighting equipment on the car is LED, and it was decided to completely abandon the three-door version.
In general, no one expected a radical change in the image of the Golf, but the changes in the car’s interior were much more serious. The driver is greeted by the new multifunction steering wheel and digital cockpit (Innovision Cockpit), formed by an electronic instrument panel on a 10.25-inch screen and located to the right of it a touch-screen multimedia system at 8.0 or 10.0 ″.
The company paid special attention to improving the finishing materials of the new Volkswagen Golf 8 2021 and increasing the level of comfort of the car, added contour lighting (depending on the configuration, it can be 10, 30 or 32 colors) and reduced the number of physical buttons as much as possible, unloading the center console as much as possible.
For example, the control of light and heating (steering wheel and glass) is placed on a special block to the left of the steering wheel, and on cars with a robotic gearbox, instead of a gearshift lever, a compact transmission mode switch was placed on the central tunnel (like on new Porsche). This made it possible to place an additional lot on the dashboard for small things.
We also note that the new multimedia system for Volkswagen Golf 2020-2021 has acquired support for managing voice commands and network access using eSIM technology. Thus, the owner was able not only to access streaming audio and video, but also to remotely update software and install new applications.
The Personalization 2.0 system has learned to remember the driver’s preferences and configure most of the systems for him, navigation has become interactive, plus the car can be accessed from a smartphone through a special application. In this case, using the phone it will be possible not only to open the doors, but also to start the engine and much more.
The new Volkswagen Golf 8 2021 is based on an upgraded version of the MQB modular platform. The overall length of the hatchback is 4,284 mm (+ 16), width – 1,789, height – 1,456 (- 36), the size of the wheelbase has increased to 2,636 (+ 16). Trunk volume, ground clearance (clearance) and weight have not yet been specified.
For the European version, many power plants are offered: in the base of the car it comes with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine EA211 Evo for 90 or 110 hp, and a 1.5-liter “turbo four” TSI with a return of 130 or 150 h.p. with the function of deactivating half of the cylinders at low loads.
Plus, there are two 2.0-liter TDI diesel engines for 115 and 150 “horses” (both with a urea neutralization system), and only for the latter is the 4Motion all-wheel drive transmission optionally available. Engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission, or with a seven-speed DSG robot with two clutches.
In addition, for gasoline engines with a power of 110, 130 and 150 hp. eTSI version available with belt-driven starter-generator and compact lithium-ion battery. According to the manufacturer, the “soft” hybrid is 10% more economical than cars with a conventional internal combustion engine, ie. without a hybrid makeweight.
Buyers can also choose the Volkswagen Golf 8 with a full hybrid eHybrid setup, which is based on a 1.4-liter petrol engine, complemented by a six-speed preselective gearbox with an integrated electric motor and a 13 kWh battery (previously 8.7 kWh).
The total output can reach 204 hp, or 245 “horses” on the modification of the Golf GTE. Batteries here can be recharged from an external network, but the recharging time is not specified, as well as there is no information about the maximum distance that can be covered solely on electric traction.
The company decided to abandon the all-electric e-Golf in order not to create internal competition with the recently presented Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback on electric traction. In the twentieth year, the manufacturer promises to prepare also a methane 1.5 TGI, “heated” versions of the GTI and GTD, as well as a “charged” 300-horsepower all-wheel drive Golf R.
It is also reported that the new Volkswagen Golf 2021 became the first production car of the brand, equipped with the Car2X system for communication with other cars and road infrastructure within a radius of 800 meters. Plus in the presence of “Travel Assist” – a track autopilot with the function of keeping the car in the occupied lane and automatic braking, operating at speeds up to 210 km / h.
But you cannot take your hands off the steering wheel for more than 15 seconds, otherwise the system will start to “swear”. If the driver ignores all light and sound warnings, then the car must independently brake to a complete stop.
Note that for all the time (since 1974) more than 35 million golfs have been sold around the world, while the seventh generation car in 2018 sold over 732,000 units – this is the seventh place in the ranking of the best-selling cars. Only on the Russian market, the indicators are modest: in the first nine months of the nineteenth year, only 884 hatches were sold.
What is the price
The start of sales of Volkswagen Golf 8 in the markets of Germany and Austria fell on December nineteenth, and the car reached Russia only in the spring of the twenty-first.
