What is eco-product and how it helps to save lives on busy highways

Wild animals, it turns out, also need crossings through the tracks. The experience of building so-called eco-ducts on modern highways shows that these structures are fully justified.

Probably the most famous example is an eco-product on the 170th kilometer of the M3 “Ukraine” highway in the Kaluga region. Most experts agree that this design perfectly facilitates the natural migration of wild animals.

The location of the ecoduk on the 170th kilometer was not chosen by chance – it is here, according to the results of scientists’ observations, that the usual paths and paths of various forest inhabitants, primarily elk (elk), are located. But it is moose running out onto a busy highway that are often the cause of serious accidents. Meeting an animal on the road is dangerous both for itself and for drivers and passengers of transport.

Since the opening of the eco-duct on the M3 highway (September 13, 2016) and the installation of protective fences, accidents involving moose and other wild animals have dropped to almost zero in this area.

According to the monitoring results (studies of animal tracks, as well as photo and video recording of the site), the transition is popular. For example, last year a significantly larger number of animals passed through the eco-product than before.

The monitoring has been carried out for several years by the specialists of the Avtodor Group of Companies (it manages the M3 highway) together with colleagues from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kaluga Region, as well as from the Moscow Automobile and Road Institute (MADI). Together, they found that last year moose tracks were found about 3 times more often than in 2018 or 2017.

Other animals also appreciated the transition: numerous tracks of hares, wild boars, foxes and roe deer were found on the ecoduk.
The newest toll road M11 “Neva” is also built taking into account the movement of wild animals. Here, special animal passages are widely used, isolated from the main line by noise protection screens.

And there are 30 such structures only on the sixth site (in the Novgorod region). All of them are located in the places of the identified migration of animals. The result of the construction of animal crossings is still justified – for the entire period of operation of the site, not a single accident with the participation of a wild animal has been registered here.
