What To Do If A Check Engine Error Caught Fire On The Road: Set Aside Panic

If the “Check Engine” indicator on the dashboard lights up, then don’t panic right away. It is also not necessary to stop moving and frantically search for the phone of the nearest tow truck.

However, it would be a mistake to completely ignore such a signal. The “engine error” lamp signals that a malfunction has been detected in some of the engine systems: fuel, air, cooling or exhaust gases. The reasons for this can be very different. Below we list the most common ones.

Check Engine Error

  • The oxygen sensor or its wiring is damaged, for example, due to the fact that the driver caught on the bottom on the road or ran over an obstacle that was too high.
  • If the “check” caught fire almost immediately after refueling, most likely the fault is low-quality gasoline.
  • An error can also occur after poor-quality auto repair work, as well as inept tuning, anti-corrosion treatment or additional noise insulation.
  • One of the sensors of the engine management system or its wiring is out of order. Self-diagnostics will also show misfire, too rich or lean mixture, out-of-sync crankshaft and camshaft sensors and fuel pump malfunctions.

When the Check Engine lights up, first it is worth assessing whether the car’s behavior on the road has changed: acceleration dynamics, engine power, jerks. It is worth paying attention to the state of the control devices – whether the engine temperature is approaching the red zone, whether the tachometer needle is twitching. If nothing of the kind is noticed, you can continue driving.

Check Engine Error

If there are clearly any problems with the car, you should not panic and call a tow truck either. The movement can be continued, but it is better to change the direction to the nearest car service, so that the malfunction can be found and eliminated there.

Even if some sensors fail, the engine management system can maintain the stable operation of the car, compensating for the lack of information with fixed values from the controller’s memory. Or, without receiving a signal, the system can regard the situation as the worst and put the motor into an “emergency” mode with a limitation of its performance.

A favorite question of car owners – will the engine start to deteriorate if the knock sensor is faulty? No, the controller will simply set the ignition angle as late as possible to be sure to prevent detonation.

The only sensor, in case of failure of which most existing engines will not start, is the crankshaft sensor. Although there are exceptions – for example, a Daewoo Matiz with a 1.0 four-cylinder engine can work without it: the missing signal will replace the camshaft sensor.

Car diagnostics

You can diagnose the system and understand the cause of the error yourself. To do this, you need to purchase a special portable scanner, as well as install a communication program with the car on your smartphone. The device is inserted into the OBD II diagnostic connector, communicates with the phone via Bluetooth or Wi-fi and can read the errors recorded by the controller in the engine operation.

Some programs do not always interpret error codes correctly, so it is better to double-check the decoding of codes for a specific car using an Internet search. The scanner will also allow you to determine whether this is a temporary error or permanent, and will also allow you to erase it and pay off the “check”.

If the engine error is temporary, then after a certain number of starts it may disappear by itself. A good way to test this is to disconnect the terminal from the battery and de-energize the vehicle for ten minutes. If it helps, then the error was accidental. In the event of a serious malfunction, the signal will remain on.

However, even if the defect appears to be minor and the vehicle does not change its behavior, the Check Engine should still be removed as quickly as possible. After all, while the signal is lit for a “nonsense” reason, it will not be able to notify about the appearance of more serious troubles.
